Kennels and boarding

Leaving your puppy at home when you travel

You should never leave your puppy alone for any extended length of time. If you're going away on holiday, or even just for the weekend, you need to plan ahead for a secure and safe place to board your pet.

A reputable boarding kennel will provide reliable care and attention in a pet-friendly environment. While all they'll ask of you is an up-to-date vaccination certificate, you need to make sure they, or you, have current pet insurance, just in case your pet needs emergency care in your absence. Also make sure they have an adequate supply of your puppy's food. Provide a supply if necessary. Suddenly switching to a different food provided by the kennel can trigger severe stomach upset.

Ask friends with pets or your veterinarian to recommend the best kennels in your area.

If you are fortunate enough to have friends or family who'll offer to look after your puppy while you're away, make sure they know what's involved before you agree. It is also helpful to take your puppy to their house for a few visits before you leave so your puppy gets used to his new temporary "family" and surroundings.
